Connecticut Auto Accidents: Avoiding A Pile-Up This Winter

Tuesday, February 18th, 2020 by | Posted In: Auto Accidents

Has this ever happened to you? You’re driving through a snowstorm when you see a bunch of cars stopped ahead in the distance. You do the logical, responsible thing and slow down, but defensive driving isn’t enough. You slide over the same slick surface and collide into another vehicle. Mere moments later, another car hits you from behind and the pile-up continues.

Vehicle pile-ups are most likely to happen during snow and rainstorms and when visibility is poor. Unfortunately, because of the weather, pile-ups can come out of nowhere, surprising unsuspecting drivers. However, combined with slick conditions, multiple vehicles have a greater likelihood of colliding when drivers are tailgating, stop suddenly or aren’t being careful on slick roads.

The best solution to avoid a pile-up? Know the signs of one, so you can pull over to the side of the road.

  1. If the weather is poor, snowing, raining, or foggy, slow down your vehicle.
  2. Anticipate your movements. Slow and brake with plenty of distance.
  3. Know the forecast.
  4. Give others enough space on the road.
  5. Examine your tires to make sure there is enough tread.
  6. If the weather worsens, pull off the road to somewhere safe.
  7. Don’t rely on 4-wheel drive. These vehicles can be taller and pose a tipping hazard.
  8. Stay alert – avoid distractions while you are driving.
