New AAA Data Shows Change In Travel Patterns During The Early Part Of 2020

As data continues to pour in about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on various aspects of our lives, one area that is of particular interest is how it affected our daily travel.  AAA has done some research on this and has found one interesting number that explains much of the changed travel patterns.

The new AAA data indicates that 26% of people stayed home the entire day during the early days of the pandemic.  That means more than a quarter of people were homebound for much of 2020 and traffic volume on Connecticut roads concurs with this finding.

As we’ve talked about previously on this blog traffic volume was down during the early stages of the pandemic, but Connecticut auto accidents that did happen led to more fatalities than usual on our roads.

The study conducted by AAA also found that there were changes in how often people traveled in the early days of the pandemic that never rebounded throughout the year to pre-pandemic levels.  People who were out traveling participated in lower amounts of travel between March 2020 and December 2020.

The baseline that AAA used to determine the dip was the average number of daily trips that travelers took throughout 2019 which landed at 3.7 daily trips.  This compared month by month to the following data:

From a traffic standpoint this indicates that roads were less congested (as was expected to be revealed in the data.)  While data remains to be seen for 2021, it would be reasonable to think that these numbers would rebound as the economy of the country reopened and more people returned to the workforce.

While the study does not draw any direct correlations between the number of trips per day that someone took and the likelihood that they would get into a Connecticut auto accident it does confirm what was suspected all along that traffic congestion was down significantly throughout the later two-thirds of 2020.
