What Could A Delayed Cancer Diagnosis Mean For Your Recovery

When you are experiencing symptoms and you go to a doctor to get them checked out, you may not always get the right diagnosis on the first trip to your provider.  In fact, it is very possible that you will either be misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.  This is the case with many patients who later discover that their symptoms were actually being caused by a type of cancer that they now must have treated.

A delayed diagnosis of cancer may lead to more serious and devastating patient outcomes and it may also be considered a Connecticut medical malpractice case.  A recent study concluded that even a very short delay in being diagnosed with cancer can have serious impacts on a patient’s mortality rate.  In fact, the study found that for every four week period of time that a cancer diagnosis was delayed a patient’s mortality rate increased sharply depending on the type of cancer that was diagnosed.

With every subsequent four week window of delayed cancer diagnosis the mortality rate of patients would increase.  If a doctor misdiagnoses your cancer as something else and you are not actually diagnosed with cancer for months after your initial consultation you may have a dramatic increase in your mortality rate.

It is for this reason it is so important that you ask the right questions of your medical provider and then seek a second opinion if you are still uncertain that your provider’s diagnosis is the correct diagnosis.  If you are faced with the difficult reality that a cancer diagnosis was missed or delayed you may also be facing a reality that you have a Connecticut medical malpractice case on your hands.  You may need a medical and legal team that can lead the charge on your behalf while you get yourself healthy and back on your feet.  Our doctor/attorney, Robert Messey, MD, JD and our nurse/attorney Gayle Sullivan, RN, JD, will lead our medical and legal teams to help uncover the truth behind your diagnosis.
